How does a teacher and personal trainer become a leading authority in marketing?
Jeremy Ryan Slate received his masters degree in ancient history from Seton Hall University and studied literature at Oxford University, only to graduate into one of the worst job markets in history. Instead of going on to achieve his PhD and teach college, he ended up continuing as the weekend manager at the same gym he worked at for 8 years. After painting houses, teaching at a private school, launching a personal training company, trying his hand in network marketing, and selling life insurance, he was burned out and looking for something different.
In 2015, Jeremy started the Create Your Own Life Podcast and the rest, as they say, is history. With now listeners in over 175 countries and over a million downloads, he has interviewed the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk, Seth Godin, Grant Cardone, and many other top business leaders. He also runs Command Your Brand Media and Slate Media Productions, and teaches entrepreneurs how to grow 7 and 8 figure businesses.
How did he do it? What made the difference?
In our conversation with Jeremy, he shares his biggest asset and his biggest flaw. He explains how he discovered his passion and purpose in life, how to differentiate yourself, and the types of people you want to surround yourself and learn from. He also reveals the anchor habit that keeps him focused and on point every day, along with some key questions that successful 7 and 8 figure business owners ask themselves in terms of getting things done.
It was a pleasure going behind the scenes with Jeremy, and we hope his story will inspire you to break the chains of ordinary and create the life and business that you truly want.
Key Takeaways
- Be willing to put in ten times the effort so you can build your skills quickly. Keep showing up.
- Focus on ventures that help promote each other.
- Seek counsel rather than advice. Asking for advice assumes you’re on the same level as them. Seeking counsel indicates that you’re looking to learn from people who are further along the path, who have done what you want to do.
- Differentiate yourself by telling people why they should care about your brand. If you’re not differentiating, you are simply promoting everyone else in the same space.
- We’re all entrepreneurs but the system isn’t set up for us to win as entrepreneurs. Apprenticeship is a huge thing that is missing. Coaching is filling that gap, but there is a double-edged sword where some coaches haven’t done what they’re coaching people on.
- Two questions that 7 and 8 figure entrepreneurs ask themselves: Who can do this better than me? Who can I pay to do this?
- Develop self-awareness, figure out what you’re good at AND what you’re not good at. Don’t be afraid to surround yourself with people who will tell you that you’re wrong, because you don’t grow if you surround yourself with ‘yes’ men.
